The Host

In the story the character Wanderer (the soul inhabiting Melanie's body) begins to love Melanie's brother- Jamie and falls in Love with Melanie's boyfriend, Jared. I couldn't help but to question her love for them. Wanderer didn't naturally develop these feelings all on her own, but rather felt Melanie's emotion as she roamed melanie's memories. BY constantly seeing and feeling the memories Wanderer eventually loved them just as strongly as Melanie. When Jamie develops an attachment to Wanderer it only because she looks like his sister, and even though Wanderer cares for him she never develpoed a real relationship with him prior to their encounter in order to really care for him: never talked to him, never held him when he was scared, nothing; if she never did any of these things then it cannot be real love. The same applies to her feelings toward Jared. Its like when teenagere are "in love" with some movies star : most only like the actors because they played a funny, sensitive, and brave guy in a movie or two but do not really KNOW how their personalities are in real life. Wanderer was already in love with Jared before she laid eyes on his actual form and Jared despises her. Even if she wasn't an alien he only ever loved Melanie and still loves her.

Do you think Wanderer's feelings of love toward Jamie and Jared are genuine or just an influence of Melanies stong human emotion?

if u ask me wanderer really did love them. it doesnt matter if we think it was real, she believed it was real. her mind was still in control of melanie's body and even though melanie showed her memories it was still her choice to receive them. it was wanderer's choice to acknowledge the feelings that she had. she risked her life for jamie and melanie didnt tell her to do that. it may have seemed like melanie was leading her on, but in the end wanderer wanted to love someone and she chose jamie and jared. jamie loved his sister, but he also loved wanderer. it may have started off with him liking her because she looked like his sister, but then it ended up just like it did with ian: he started to love here for her mind not her body. wanderer may not have grown up with jamie or held him when he was scared, but she felt like she had and she still chose to love him. there are a lot of people who have had the chance to care for someone and spend time with someone and develop memories with that person and they still choose not to love them. wanderer, whether conciously or not, chose to love melanie's family. and if all the affection for them was just coming fro mmelanie's body why did she still love them in the end?

Well to sum up all my thoughts, Wanderer chose to fall in love. Melanie didn't force her to desire the images she gave her. As Wanderer spends more time in Melanie's body she becomes more human like and her feelings are a humanly reaction to what Melanie had shown her. The feelings Wanderer has are in no way borrowed or influenced. The only thing Melanie controls is what Wanderer sees, not what she feels, hears, or does. Melanie may be present but we have to remember that she's the puppet not Wanderer.
